It’s your last birthday before you officially become an adult, you better hold tight for this one.
For 17 years we’ve done this now, together. You’ve been a part of our world, our world that began when we were 20 and 21, well even before that if you count the fact that we dated during high school. Who would have thought at 21 and 22 we would welcome our first little boy into this world.
As I carried you for nine months, give me a moment while I reminisce a bit, I imagined, even dreamed about what you would look like. When you were born you looked exactly the way I expected. Funny though when you dream about your babies before they are born, you don’t usually imagine what they will look like as teenagers or adults, only kids.
I expect that’s because you simply aren’t able to think that far ahead. Your mind isn’t ready to go to that place. It’s taken a while, if we’re honest, to get to that place. Because apparently parents grow with kids, we’re just all learning all the time, growing and finding our place and readjusting the longer we travel this road, together.
But, as you embark on this last curve on the road to adulthood, we’re feeling okay about this whole thing. You’re a smart guy, you care about people, you want to do good in the world, you have plans for the future and you know what it’s going to take to achieve them, most importantly you know that God’s in control and you know that following Him will always lead you on the right path.
So we’re going to keep doing this together, figuring it out as we go, praying about it the whole way. Son we are proud of you, for what you have become and where you are headed. That little bald, blue eyed baby has become a young man that we are honored to parent. We love you, happy birthday!
